Following his departure from Sevilla last summer, the Spanish icon's transfer to Liga MX represents a new chapter in his brilliant career. Ramos has opted to wear the No. 93 shirt in Monterrey as an homage to his famous stoppage-time header in the 2014 UEFA Champions League final. That important goal in the 93rd minute forced extra time against Atletico Madrid, paving the path for Real Madrid's record-breaking 10th European title.

Real Madrid paid tribute to their former captain with a touching post on social media, saying:

"A tribute to all Real Madrid fans, a memory of a moment that changed our history. Always grateful, @SergioRamos. Good luck and success."

Ramos was with Real Madrid for 16 years, having signed from Sevilla as a young potential. During his tenure at the Bernabeu, he captained the team to four Champions League victories and five La Liga crowns. His effect was as substantial on the international stage, as he played a major role in Spain's 2010 World Cup success as well as their 2008 and 2012 European Championship victories.

Monterrey has been eyeing the Spanish veteran since his departure from Sevilla, and club president Jose Antonio Noriega said that several attempts were made to lure him to Mexico.

"We have been trying to sign him since last summer, but we did not come to terms and we tried again in this new window," he said.

"The team needs him, he has quality, enormous experience, enormous personality and he is an undisputed leader."

Ramos' addition boosts Monterrey's roster as they prepare for a historic season. The Mexican powerhouse is one of three Liga MX teams selected to play in the enlarged FIFA Club World Cup in the United States next summer, with James Rodriguez's Leon and Pachuca. Ramos, who has extensive experience in high-stakes contests, is anticipated to play an important part in Monterrey's quest of silverware on both the local and international arenas.
