Berta, a seasoned football executive who previously shaped Atletico Madrid’s squad for over a decade, has reportedly agreed to join Arsenal. His appointment is expected to be finalized soon, with his focus immediately shifting towards enhancing Mikel Arteta’s squad for the upcoming season. With no concerns over breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations, Arsenal are primed to make significant investments.
The 53-year-old Italian is reportedly targeting reinforcements in several key areas, including a backup goalkeeper, left-back, defensive midfielder, left-winger, striker, and additional cover for star player Bukayo Saka. A versatile central midfielder could also be added to further solidify the squad’s depth.
One of Arsenal’s primary targets this summer is Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi. The Gunners are reportedly keen to trigger the £51 million ($66m) release clause in the Spain international’s contract, with Berta viewing Zubimendi as a crucial addition to the team’s midfield engine. The club is also monitoring Athletic Club’s Nico Williams and Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, both of whom could feature in Arsenal’s summer transfer plans.
Arsenal are also targeting Newcastle United's Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak. Guimaraes, in particular, is seen as an ideal fit for Arteta’s system, bringing dynamism and control to the midfield alongside Zubimendi. While a move for Isak may be challenging, Arsenal are also considering RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko as a potential alternative. The Slovenian striker is reportedly interested in a move to the Emirates, making him a strong candidate if negotiations with Isak falter. Additionally, the Gunners have kept an eye on Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, who was previously linked to the club.
As Berta prepares to lead Arsenal through an ambitious summer of recruitment, the focus will be on how his strategic decisions shape the club’s future. With Arteta aiming to turn Arsenal into serious title contenders both domestically and in Europe, the backing from the club’s hierarchy will be crucial to achieving those goals.
