The Belgian shot-stopper will provide competition for current goalkeepers Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, who have both made costly errors in the early stages of the season. Onana’s mistakes contributed to United’s Carabao Cup exit against League Two side Grimsby Town, where Ruben Amorim’s team lost 12-11 on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Bayindir has also come under scrutiny after misjudging crosses in defeats to Arsenal and Burnley.
Lammens expressed his excitement after completing the move to Old Trafford. Speaking to Manchester United’s official website, he said: “I am extremely proud to be joining Manchester United; it is a real dream come true. The past few years have been an amazing journey; it’s now ended in an incredible destination and hopefully the beginning of something special. You can feel the positive atmosphere that is being created here, and I know that I can make a real impact at the club in the coming years.”
Standing at 6ft 4in (193cm), Lammens made 64 appearances for Royal Antwerp across all competitions. His performances helped the club secure the Belgian Super Cup in 2023. Although yet to make his senior debut for Belgium, he was previously called up for World Cup qualifying matches against North Macedonia and Wales.
The goalkeeper was not selected for Belgium’s latest international fixtures but could be in contention for Manchester United’s squad in the upcoming Manchester derby against City on September 14.
